I've never heard of this show and think I'll check it out!
I had a lot of Russian classmates when I attended high school in Germany. I admittedly found them a bit intimidating and stand-offish at first (the resting-bitch-face reference nails it 🙈) until I gave them the chance to warm up to me. That's when everything pivoted - such amazing people! I learned bits of Russian and a lot about the culture (beyond all the clichés) through them.
It saddens me that Russia is generally portrayed so negatively in light of recent events despite having made so many artistic and literary contributions and having such a rich history, not to mention the beautiful language and great cuisine. Visiting St. Petersburg is still on my bucket list and I hope one day it will be possible again 🙏
Honestly, I don't think it was advertised very well. I probably would have skipped past it if I hadn't found the book. It makes me so happy to hear you have that opinion of Russians and Russian culture! My mom has been very worried about people judging her for being Russian ever since the war broke out and it's really sad to see. The worst part is, I completely understand where she's coming from because I do see negative comments about Russia pretty often. Thank you for being so lovely and open-minded, I hope you can visit one day! It's been a long time since I've been back. My mom always said St Petersburg is the most beautiful city ❤️
This show was phenomenal, the acting superb, deserves more accolades! Now I must read the book. I was afraid I would be disappointed like Station Eleven. I fell in love with the series and the book didn't hold the same magic for me.
Right? I don't care that my review is about a year after the series was released, it definitely deserves more attention. The book has a slower pace, especially the first half, but it'll give the story a lot more depth so I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I can imagine how difficult it is for anyone of Russian descent at the moment, there are a lot of unfair, biased opinions...
I'm pretty sure your mum is right, even though I haven't seen it (yet) with my own eyes! Here's hoping 🤞
